Born in Northern England in the late 1960s, Northern Soul centers around rare, up-tempo American soul music from the 1960s and 1970s. 

• • The Sound: Heavy, driving basslines, fast tempos, and a stomping beat (originally popularized at legendary clubs like the Wigan Casino). 

  • The Culture: Known for incredibly athletic dancing, including spins, back-drops, and kicks, often accompanied by talcum powder on the floor to reduce friction. 

  • The Vibe: Underground, collector-focused, and obsessed with finding rare, obscure vinyl “hidden gems.”
